Overview
Karen Blixen Museum Day Trip
A visit to the Karen Blixen Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Kenya’s colonial history and the life of one of the country’s most famous settlers. Located in the quiet suburb of Karen in Nairobi, the museum was once the home of Karen Blixen, a Danish author and coffee farmer best known for writing the book Out of Africa.
The museum is situated at the base of the scenic Ngong Hills and was originally part of a large coffee plantation owned by Karen Blixen and her husband. The house, built in 1910, features a distinctive red-tiled roof and classic colonial-style wooden interiors. When Karen Blixen purchased the property, the estate covered approximately 6,000 acres of land, though only about 600 acres were actively used for coffee farming.
The remaining land remained as natural forest. During the guided tour, visitors explore the preserved rooms of the house, many of which still display original furniture and household items from Karen Blixen’s time. The restored kitchen is open for viewing and includes a traditional stove similar to the one used during her time on the farm, along with historic kitchen utensils.
Visitors can also see parts of the former coffee farm and equipment that was used in the early coffee production process. The museum provides an opportunity to step back in time and experience what life was like for early settlers in Kenya. Today, the site also hosts educational visits, cultural activities, research programs, and private events. Revenue generated from visitors helps support the maintenance and preservation of the museum and other heritage sites in the region. After the tour, guests will depart from the museum and return to their hotel.
